Desi-Mex (Tacos)

We love both Indian and Mexican food. There’s a natural harmony between the two cuisines. So, when we came across a fusion joint in Midtown, NY, we were excited (yes food excites us!). We went on a cold weekend to the city as a family and checked out the taco place. We ordered and waited at the edge of our seats… in anticipation… Tacos came. Didn’t pass the visual test. Taste – hmmm, decent, but didn’t meet our expectations. It was like watching a movie based on a novel you love and visualized in your imagination, but the movie doesn’t do justice to the novel. Anyway, we still had the urge to create a fusion, that’s when this idea came on one fine Sat morning… the idea then got translated to our lunch and the rest as they say is history ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • Then add the curry leaves and mix. You will smell the aroma of the leaves.
  • Next comes the chili powder, black pepper, turmeric and salt. Sautรฉ till you see the onions glistening with the oil.
  • Finally add the shredded chicken, toss well and cook for about 5 mins. Taste test and adjust salt and black pepper if needed.
  • Make fresh phulkas or warm the tortilla.

Assemble the Tacos

  • Spreadย green chutneyย on the phulka
  • Add chicken and then the mixed veggies. More the veggies the better it tastes.
  • Top it off with creamy sriracha mayo & sprinkle coriander leaves

Lakshmi’s Tips

  • Perfect dinner option or evening snack for the hungry school kids with leftover protein combined with fresh veggies.
  • The protein could be leftover chana masala or paneer from your takeout paneer tikka masala ๐Ÿ™‚
  • For the chicken, either you can make your own shredded chicken or buy the Rotisserie chicken from Costco and de-bone/de-skin before using.
