Fish Cutlets Burger

This fish cutlet burger, a family favorite, is an easy recipe I learned from my Bengali friend. It’s a go-to dish in our home, and we make it often for a quick, flavorful meal! You can easily freeze these fish cutlets for later! Just prepare them in advance, freeze, and fry whenever you’re ready to enjoy a quick and delicious fish cutlet burger. I send it for my daughter when she goes off to college after a break.

Fish Cutlets Burger

This Indian-style fish cutlet burger is a perfect mix of spice and crunch! Canned tuna gets a tasty upgrade with flavorful Indian spices, mashed into crispy cutlets, and tucked into soft burger buns. A tangy chutney or mayo on the side makes it the ultimate quick, delicious meal!

Servings 12 Fish cutlets

Ingredients

  • 3 cans Tuna
  • 2 big Russet Potatoes
  • 1 big Red onion finely chopped
  • 8 Garlic
  • 8 Green Chilies add less if you want it less spicy
  • ½ cup Coriander (Cilantro) finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp Dhania (Coriander Seeds) Powder
  • 1 tsp Garam Masala
  • 2 Eggs
  • 1 cup Breadcrumbs
  • Oil to pan fry
  • Salt to taste

To Serve

  • Burger Buns (sesame seeded are the best)
  • Lettuce (of your choice)
  • Red Onions cut in circles
  • Tomatoes cut in circles
  • Cheese Slices (pepperjack works well)
  • Ketchup/Mayo/Hot and Sweet sauce

Instructions

Now, let's cook!!

  • Steam the potatoes, peel skin and mash it well and keep aside.
  • Grind garlic and green chillies with a little water to a smooth paste.
  • Heat oil, add chopped onions and sauté till translucent
  • Add the ground chili garlic paste and fry for a minute.
  • Add turmeric powder, dhania powder and Garam Masala and mix well. Saute til the raw smell goes away.
  • Open the tuna cans, drain the water and add the tuna to the onion mixture and sauce well for about 3 mins.
  • Now add the boiled and mashed potatoes, chopped coriander leaves, salt and mix it well. Taste test and add more salt if needed. Let the mixture cool down.

Let's roll, dip and fry!!

  • Roll the mixture into good sized balls.
  • Keep the two bowls ready – beaten eggs and bread crumbs.
  • Flatten each ball into the size of your palm so it is perfect for the size of the burger buns you have.
  • Dip the cutlets/patties in egg and then in breadcrumbs and keep aside.
  • Heat oil in an iron pan, and add the cutlets. Let it cook and get browned on one side.
  • Flip it over and cook the other side. Remember the mixture is already cooked, all we need to wait is for the outer coating to turn nice and brown.
  • Toasted buns tastes better (for me).

Assembling time!!

  • When done, build your burger in the burger buns with lettuce, onion rings, fish cutlets, cheese slice and any sauce you like. Enjoy with a side of French fries.
  • Savor the burger while it's hot!

Tips

  • After the fish cutlet is cooked on one side, flip it over and keep a cheese slice on it so it melts on the patty
  • Sauces like ketchup, mayo or hot and sweet sauce work well. Spice it up with some Sriracha Mayo. I usually do half mayo and half sriracha for a spicy creamy sauce. It’s totally according to your taste.
  • You can spread spicy green chutney on the inside of the buns.
  • Can add lightly sautéed crunchy cabbage, jalapeno and green pepper as a layer.
  • My husband likes to eat the cutlets as is, dipped in green chutney.
  • When you freeze a lot, make sure to use parchment paper in between the cutlets so they don't stick to each other.
